There is a general adage in life, if it looks too good to be true; it probably is. This is entirely true with car parts too.
We mentioned in another post that we has gone ahead and purchased a short shift kit for Ermy. This was on the basis that it was £45 from https://www.japspeed.co.uk/ and originally the listing for the part stated that this was compatible with the Mk1 and Mk2, but when it arrived, it was clear that it wasn’t going to fit. And yes, we went back and checked, we had not been entirely daft and ordered the wrong one.
The issue was a change in the pivot points that support the shifter. On the Mk1, there is 1. On the Mk2, there are 2. This is a lump of metal which is usually used to make the shifter pivot, but which for us is in the way of the fulcrum raising rings that support and raise the shifter.
Clearly we were never going to be able to add the extra height to the fulcrum and once again we were caught out by the Mk2 being the less popular model. s a result, there are less compatible parts and the cheapest short shift kit we have seen so far is coming in at £125. Hard to justify when the original car was only £200. Perhaps one to save for the Exocet when we get that built. For now, we have replaced the gaskets and rebuilt the interior and will just have to live with the longer throw.
