After the poor results at the weekend, I had another crack at the clear coat. We have been spraying Novol Novakryl 540 and the final top layer was just too fine. It left a thin almost sandpaper feel that just wouldnt buff up or shine.
The technical documentation for the 540 seems to suggest a ratio of 2:1 clear to hardener. The issue seems to be that the final mix was just too thick to go through the gun and atomise properly (Maybe the effects of that tiny compressor and low pressure?) So, I had another go with 20% thinners added, just to loosen the mix up slightly, then basically drenched the panel in it moving the gun quickly to try and avoid runs.
Unfortunately today was not an ideal spray day and it has taken a while to go off, but the results are clearly an improvement. Look, its all shiny.
