Why I passionately hate doing bodywork

Sanding, so much sanding.

I just dont have the patience for bodywork I really dont.

This morning started at 8am and I needed to spray a bonnet, 2 wings and 2 doors inside and out, along with the Wing mirrors. All of them were going through a colour change, from Silver to Ermy Orange (Hey, we live in Essex, she is basically getting a spray tan)

Its now 5pm and bar a slight detour to Tesco for bacon (And to collect a short shift kit) I have been at it all day. This may be because I set the spray gun output super low to prevent a terrible finish, because I hadn’t stripped the car doors yet, or possibly because I have a tiny little compressor purchased from Aldi, Either way it seems to just take ages to get a decent coverage. Particularly on the bonnet where you only seem to add 2 inches of colour at a time and need 4 layers to build it up so you cant see the primer. This means that spraying a bonnet takes bloody ages.

It also seems that you dont realise that you’ve stuffed something up until its too late. For example the bonnet we are using was one we traded with someone from the MX5 Forums. His car (Max) had a bonnet with ruined lacquer, whereas Car-Daver had a perfect one. Since I was going to sand it down anyway, we did a trade. The issue was a few stone chips at the front which I filled and sanded. I thought I had them all, until I found a few more. After I had sprayed her.

Prior to this the chips were the same colour as the paint work and didn’t show up, but once a fresh layer of paint was on they showed up really quite badly. And I cant be bothered to go back and fix them just now.

Perhaps if I had a fully kitted out booth, decent spray guns and a full sized compressor it would be easier, but for now I am just glad we are done. Oh except I need to spend a week buffing all of the orange peel effect out of the top coat.
